It matters little to what pole of doctrine the intellect swings, if the heart hangs unpenetrated and untouched.
Christmas is not so much a matter of explanation and interpretation as it is a mood and a feeling. It is a time in the cycle of the year set apart by hope and fellowship and generosity. Christmas is the season of the heart.
The Advent season is a time for getting our hearts in tune, and that is no quick and easy matter. It is not like tuning in the radio with a simple twist of the wrist. The heart is a much more delicate instrument. We need time to think, to pray, and to look up at the stars. That is the only way to hear the angels’ song.
When someone asks where now is thy God, we can answer that the sacred is where it always was: in the struggle. In the pain of our hearts, in the growing clearness of our minds, in the sharpening edge of conscience, in the welling up of courage, in the purpose we cannot forsake and never shall
What comes from the heart, goes to the heart
What is essential is never to allow the limitations of time and the erosion of memories to deaden the longing of the heart in its morning demand for love.
Life must have its sacred moments and its holy places. We need the infinite, the limitless, the uttermost – all that can give the heart a deep and strengthening peace.
