You must not judge a man by any one act of his life, for every man is again and again false to himself. Nor must you judge a nation or a community or a church by any special characteristic that may have belonged to it at a particular time. All have the right to be judged by the sum and substance of its life; by the net result of good and bad, of failure and success.
Most people, after one success, are so cringingly afraid of doing less well that they rub all the edge off their subsequent work.
I’m proof against that word failure. I’ve seen behind it. The only failure a man ought to fear is failure of cleaving to the purpose to be best.
I dare not fail.
